Project ACES

The Alabama Carbon Express System

Project Overview

Team

Pure Sky, Advanced Resources International, The University of Alabama, the Southern States Energy Board and Industrial CO₂ emission source partners

Location

West Central, Alabama

Sequestration

Deep Saline Reservoirs

About the Project

Project ACES aims to significantly reduce regional emissions across central Alabama by capturing and permanently storing CO₂ in deep saline reservoirs. These reservoirs lie beneath impermeable geologic formations that prevent the CO₂ from migrating out of storage — ensuring safe, long-term sequestration.

Once captured from industrial facilities, the CO₂ will be transported by pipeline to the proposed storage sites in west-central Alabama. There, it will be injected deep underground through state-of-the-art wells and continuously monitored using downhole sensors and other advanced technologies.

Project Planning and Evaluation

Before construction begins, the Project ACES team will collect extensive geological, environmental and engineering data to confirm the suitability of the storage sites and ensure the project benefits the environment, local communities and industry partners.

The team will:

  • Drill data collection wells to assess reservoir integrity, geologic seals and water quality.
  • Perform studies using techniques such as:
    • Collecting core and fluid samples from deep saline formations and overlying shale.
    • Deploying geophysical logging tools to analyze reservoir characteristics.
    • Conducting injectivity tests and evaluating legacy seismic surveys.
  • Study CO₂ capture facilities to understand gas composition, chemical properties and the most effective capture technologies.
  • Analyze the proposed transportation pipeline to assess environmental, cultural and landowner impacts, including:
    • Wetland and cultural resource surveys.
    • Right-of-way assessments.
    • Detailed engineering and design evaluations.
Project Team and Partnerships

Project ACES is a collaborative effort among industry, academic and government organizations dedicated to advancing carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) in the Southeast.

The project team includes:

  • Pure Sky
  • Advanced Resources International (ARI)
  • The University of Alabama
  • Southern States Energy Board (SSEB)
  • Industrial CO₂ emission source partners

Together, these organizations bring the technical expertise, regional insight and innovation needed to advance safe, permanent CO₂ storage and position Alabama as a leader in carbon management.
